Popular Culture

My best friend came up to visit/look after me while I was healing post surgery; we usually always end up reflecting back on our friendship and our youth; we get all sappy and nostalgic.  Since I am laid up on the couch, with lots of time on my hands and I am procrastinating about school work I fell down the rabbit hole while Googling stuff from my childhood. And of course, it’s easy to get distracted by (and to be frank, a little insulted by) Instagram reels and TikToks that point out the fact that some of my beloved pop culture items and icons are turning 20 years old or older; insert scared face here!

At this stage in my life right now, many of things I loved are coming back into fashion. As they always say; “what is old is new again.”

Tamagotchi
For those of you unfamiliar with this addictive toy, they are,  “a small alien species that deposit an egg on Earth to see what life was like, and it is up to the player to raise the egg into an adult creature. The creature goes through several stages of growth, and will develop differently depending on the care the player provides, with better care it results in an adult creature that is smarter, happier, and requires less attention.” This was a status symbol among my peers in grade 6; I wanted one so badly, I begged my parents relentlessly. I played with it long after it was no longer “cool.” These devices ended up being banned at my elementary school because they were so distracting –much like phones are today! Having lived through the hype of this, I don’t think any phone app could ever replace this classic egg shaped, key ring pet simulator.

Skip It
Time Magazine actually includes the Skip It on their “100 Greatest Toys Ever” list and it persisted until 2009; however, I had outgrown it well before that time. My Skip It was pink and had the counter; which was pretty advanced because in its original form it looked more like a Wiffle ball attached to rope with an ankle ring. I got mine from my older cousins as a hand-me -down; most of their hand-me-downs were as the kids back in the 90’s would say, “lame,” but this…this Skip It was GLORIOUS in my eyes! I spent hours playing with this thing; it was better than traditional jump-rope. I can still hear the sound of it spinning on the concrete pad in the backyard.

Blockbuster Video Trips
I LOVED going to Blockbuster video to rent movies; first VHS and then DVD. As awesome as Netflix and Amazon Prime are, there was just something about heading off with my friends to pick out a movie or two for a sleepover. You ended up discovering some really great movies (some by total fluke and other by HUMAN recommendations). Blockbuster had snacks as well! I enjoyed slapping down my very own Blockbuster card on the counter each and every time (I don’t know why this was so satisfying, but it was). Renting movies was a cheap alternative to going to a movie theater (you could rent sometimes several movies for less than 5$).

Playdium
My cousins and I spent a lot of time at this massive entertainment center at the mall. It was and is owned by Cineplex. Some locations are still open but our local haunt was closed down. Basically, this was an enormous arcade; it kind of reminds me of a casino but for youth and teens. You used a “credit card” which was pre-loaded with a set amount or time allotment. You could also pig out on food and even have your birthday party there! I spent hours playing air hockey (and having my butt kicked by my cousins), racing cars, playing pinball, shooting ducks and of course honing my horrendous Dance Dance Revolution skills.  It was an epic time!

Corduroy
Affectionately referred to as “Cords.” This almost velvety fabric makes me happy; I love the way it feels and I still fondly remember the sound it would make as I walked down the hallway to class. It makes my heart happy to see this coming back in the form of dresses, jackets, accessories like hats and even shoes. As HerWorld says, “corduroy is the new denim.”

Butterfly Clips
These were such a big part of my hair styling repertoire (rows, never scattered) that I can’t help but miss it. You saw these clips on all the big name celebrities from Sarah Michelle Gellar to JLO to Jennifer Aniston; who of course we all know was a major hair influencer –everyone had to have the iconic layered “Rachel” hair cut. The clips came in every colour and some were sparkly and some were not. These sometimes tacky clips bring me back to Friday nights with my junior high school friends getting ready for dances.

Now Music CDs
Officially called: Now That’s What I Call Music! is a series of various artists compilation albums released worldwide; for us in Canada the height was 1996-2009; but the first version dates back to 1988. The number of albums vary country to country and edition to edition; for example in Canada the “Current Series” is at 28, there is also a 2 album “Then” series, the “Country Series” features 11 albums. There are 16 albums included in the “Special Editions” series covering a variety of genres and the “Dance Series” has 5 albums. We blasted these tunes ALL the time and sang along heartily! I always got a NOW! CD in my stocking at Christmas.

Rainforest Cafe
This jungle themed restaurant which served delicious food from seafood, beef, and chicken to pastas and pizzas. It opened in 1998 and sadly closed in 2001. There still are some locations open today. I used to love going to have lunch with my friends here; it made us feel grown up. The restaurant is created to look like a tropical rainforest complete with flora and fauna, there was mist and water features, like waterfalls and “pools,” also part of the ambience was the soundscape. You really felt like you were immersed in a rainforest. What would a tropical rainforest themed restaurant be without animals… The animatronics were incredible; there were elephants, gorillas, tigers, leopards, crocodiles, frogs, iguanas, butterflies, and tropical birds, fish! My least favourite of course, were the snakes.

Cartoons
Oh the hours I spent watching: Rugrats, Animaniacs, DuckTales, Doug, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, Tiny Toons Adventures, Dexter’s Laboratory, Pinky & the Brain, TailSpin, Magic School Bus, Darkwing Duck, Sailor Moon, Goof Troop and Captain Planet… I can still relive these online via YouTube or other streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ BUT there was something about sitting cross-legged in front of the TV on Saturday mornings!

“Primitive” Forms of Communication

I truly treasure my childhood because I was free from the chains of a phone. If you wanted to communicate with your friends you called them on the landline, sought them out at recess or lunch time, you passed notes in class. Now, I see so many kids addicted to their phones; their lives literally revolve around them and heaven forbid the battle you have to fight when you make them put it away or confiscate it during class. Many are not communicating with anyone; they are mindlessly playing games or scrolling on social media. Worse yet, they are sitting right next to someone and texting them. In a time of such technological connection we are so disconnected and isolated from each other –it is truly scary.

What popular culture items & icons do you miss the most?
What ones do you wish made a comeback?

Lovely Lemonade

There is nothing sweeter than sitting on the deck in the summertime, sipping on some lovely lemonade. In addition to the sweet yet tart traditional LEMON flavour, I absolutely love: watermelon and blueberry. I know these may seem like odd flavour choices, but trust me, they are AWESOME.

My go-to recipe for traditional lemonade comes from Bon Appétit. For me, BA’s “Best Lemonade” serves as a base for the other drink concoctions I am going to present to you. These drinks can be served both alcoholic and virgin. Sometimes when I feel fancy or I am entertaining I like to add champagne for a riff on a mimosa!

Watermelon Lemonade

Ingredients…
1 pitcher of BA’s Best Lemonade
2 cups cubed watermelon
Ice

Directions…
1. Prepare lemonade as per Bon Appétit recipe
2. In a blender, puree the watermelon until it is smooth.
3. Strain through a fine sieve; to get rid of seeds
4. To prevent this delicious drink from becoming too watery, it is best to serve it right away; put ice into individual glasses, add 3-4 tablespoons of puree to each then fill the glass with your lemonade; stir & enjoy!

Blueberry Lemonade

Ingredients…
1 pitcher of BA’s Best Lemonade
2 cups fresh blueberries
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 cup water
Ice

Directions…
1. Prepare lemonade as per Bon Appétit recipe
2. In a blender, puree & mix blueberries, honey & water
3. Strain through a fine sieve; to get rid of any ‘lumps’
4. Add puree to your pitcher of lemonade, serve with ice.
*If you have left over blueberries you can add them to your glasses. EVEN BETTER: a neat touch is to use “blueberry ice cubes’ ahead of time; with whole blueberries!
*This recipe also tastes amazing if you muddle a little mint in each glass before adding the ice & lemonade

Beyond the Blizzard

Our province experienced a major heat wave this week; the AC units, fans and kiddie pools flew off the shelves. It was unbearable, but it was THE perfect excuse to eat lots of ice cream! It made me think about the time when my bestie got an ice cream maker for her birthday and we experimented with “cereal milk ice cream.” While our attempt wouldn’t make it on our list of favourites we do know of a few places where you can get excellent ice cream…and no, Dairy Queen isn’t one of them!

Village Ice Cream in Calgary
They make handcrafted ice cream starting with a dense and creamy base (made with a surprising amount of egg yolks, cream and sugar) in 10 flavours available year round, with a bunch of seasonal flavours and non-dairy, vegan and gluten free options such as: Grahamtellow, Cherry Cola, Salty Malty Pretzel, Chocolate Coconut Milk, Banana Split, Huckleberry, Passionfruit and Strawberry Shortcake. The smell of freshly made waffle cones will make your mouth water.

The Big Moo Ice Cream Parlour @ Sylvan Lake
This ice cream parlour is an institution in Sylvan Lake! They have at least 80 flavours of ice cream in addition to burgers, wraps and rice bowls. Nothing like strolling along the beach with a delicious ice cream in hand. You can get a basic two or three scoop cone or a whimsical ice cream concoction with sprinkles, candy kabobs and cookies.

Daisy McBeans @ Pigeon Lake
A cozy but bustling restaurant serves up hard and soft ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes and frozen yogurt in addition to a hearty meals and great coffee. After enjoying your ice cream, you’ll find a cute little surprise at the bottom of your cone…a jelly bean.

Marble Slab
Marble Slab made its way to Alberta in 2003 from Texas; this frozen slab concept creamery features 50 flavours and 30 kinds of mix-ins (fruits, nuts, candies, chocolate and cookies). You pick the ice cream, mix-ins and they fold everything together right before your eyes. In addition to ice cream, splits, floats, smoothies and sundaes, Marble Slab also has crumbles, cupcakes and pies made from ice cream! It is truly THE ice cream experience.

I worry that my beloved novels will lose their essence. However, there are few adaptations that I absolutely love. Today, I share with you my all time favourite: “Best Book to Movie” list!

Many people are receiving their two doses of the vaccine, case numbers dropping; we are opening up once again. There is also talk of the border opening, fingers crossed that happens soon. It’s officially summer vacation. I know I have talked a lot about travel; but I love it! I turned 35 this year and being able to go for a quick getaway with my best friend will be incredible!

We have a tried and test process we go through when planning a trip which includes…

Step 1: Determine our budgets
Step 2: Coordinate schedules
Step 3: Select the type of vacation we desire
Step 4: Pick a location
Step 5: Sourcing of accommodations, transportation, attractions and restaurants
Step 6: To do lists (everything that we want to see and do at the chosen destination)
Step 7: Packing (the essentials and employing our many tried and true packing hacks)

With the first three steps determined we began to compile a list of locations that fit with our vision of an “affordable, active sightseeing/culinary adventure for approximately 3.5-4 days”

Here are our locations so far…

-New Orleans, Louisiana
-Charleston, North Carolina
-Seattle, Washington
-Glacier Park, Montana

Country Greenthumb: Yard Tour

It was so good to finally get the garden in! This is the latest we have waited to put it in. We stopped at two new greenhouses this year.

First was Greenland in Sherwood Park. Oh my goodness it was overwhelming! They had everything from beautiful clothing and jewelry to incredible healthy, diverse and reasonably priced flowers, shrubs and trees to the most adorable garden decor and of course plant care products. This greenhouse also boasts a restaurant!

Our second stop was at Arber Greenhouse in Wetaskiwin. They had a special on hanging baskets; normally I make my own but WOW theirs were just so lush and full that I couldn’t resist… I picked up four of them for under the kitchen window. We also snagged our tomato plants there!

The remainder of our flowers were from a greenhouse in our own community. I loaded up my cart with a ton of flowers; begonias, geraniums and petunias mainly.

My garden hack this year… using a HUGE hanging basket I got from my brother-in-law and niece for my birthday and transplanting it into an equally huge barrel planter in one shot. Next year I’ll be using hanging baskets in our lower deck planters as well by simply snipping the hanger wires off. With the mosquitos being so terrible already it really saved me some time outside.

And, speaking of those wretched bugs we also got a plethora of mosquito repelling plants such as basil, lavender, lemon bomb, marigolds and mint (but of course; be careful with mint it is invasive so always plant it in a separate planter).

We got a jump on the garden, by using our new greenhouse. You can check out it’s construction on my Instagram stories!

The vegetable garden was planted with potatoes, yellow and green zucchini, yellow and green beans, peas, carrots, onions and spaghetti squash.

It may not be the Chelsea Garden show or an interactive garden designed by Kate Middleton but it’s mine and I love it… Check out my garden!

Decluttering Bug: Advice

Spring is a very busy time in our household. Usually overtime is picking up for my husband at work and of course, for me, report card season is looming and school activities begin to take off again. Between all that, we need to get the outdoor chores taken care of. So I am forced to save my major in-house spring cleaning/decluttering for the summer. I spend the first few days relaxing and preparing for our annual fishing/camping trip, THEN, I get right to it! The purge is on! This year, I will also be travelling to my childhood home to help my mom declutter her house and prepare for a future move to Alberta.

Sometimes getting started is the toughest part. The sheer amount of items or rooms to go through is overwhelming. Sometimes we resist parting with items because we may need it later or it is something we think we are more attached to than we should be.

Although decluttering is a lot of work; that feeling of a truly clean, sorted and streamlined house feels fantastic. Once I declutter a space I give it a deep and thorough cleaning down to the baseboards.

This is what I have found works for me…

1. Schedule
I firmly schedule my declutter days; usually 1 large room per day or 2 smaller rooms per day.
M: Front entryway (closets, bench & laundry room)
T: Kitchen
W: Living Room, main bathroom & linen closet
R: Upstairs guest rooms
F: Downstairs guest rooms
S: Downstairs living room & bathroom
S: Storage room, larder & freezers

2. Removal
Check the hours of the organization that you will be taking your gently used items to. Check the hours of  your ‘eco-center’ and make several trips throughout the declutter process so you don’t get overwhelmed by the pile and aren’t tempted to retrieve previously tossed items. I also find it nice to have bins/tubs set up so it is all contained and can be moved out of the house and straight to the car right away.

3. System for Discarding
Decide how you want to determine items to be kept or discarded. You may find that the KonMari approach suits you best; this is where you pick up an item and ask yourself, “Does this item give me joy?” If yes, it is kept and if not it is discarded.

I however ask myself: “Have I used this in the last year?” If I haven’t then it has to go. There are items though that aren’t used in the last 12 months that just don’t factor in to my declutter spree; we all know what those are… the staples in our lives; mine being ornaments in my curio cabinet, books, wedding dress, items tied to childhood memories of my dad that I chose specifically to bring with me from BC to Alberta.

Even if I have used an item in the last year I still ask myself about how often I use the item, how long it has been since I used it last, will I use it again and ultimately, is this worth keeping? This works with everything from clothing to kitchenware to tools.

I have avoided doing a KEEP, MAYBE, TOSS pile in each room because I found that more often than not I ended up keeping the “maybe” items and was reluctant to actually put anything in the “toss” pile. This sort of approach can work well though for those who want to blitz through rooms and take only seconds to make a judgement call. You would then repeat the process of split second decision making of the “maybe” pile; KEEP or TOSS?

If the item belongs to my husband I ask him whether he wants the item or not; I NEVER throw out anything that is not mine. (So, don’t get too carried away; after all you may not get joy from the item or you may not have used it but someone else in your household may have).

4. Evaluate Your Organization Scheme
While you declutter and clean, put things back where they actually belong and if you can’t find a good spot for them it may be time to re-classify the item as clutter. This and the decluttering process allows you to take stock of what you have so you have a better idea of what you are running low on and what you don’t need to buy more of.

Good luck! If you have any decluttering tips; please share them with us below in the COMMENTS section.

Bathing Suit Guide

Summer is here so it’s time to bust out the bathing suits!… However, it isn’t that easy, some of us experience a lot of frustration trying to pick out the most flattering bathing suit for our figure. Have no fear, I am here to share a few helpful tips to take the stress out of shopping…

–>Small Bust??…
DO pick a swimsuit top that is either padded; has contouring features like boning, has a bold pattern or ruffles to add some “heft” to your chest!

DON’T go overboard with ruffles/extra material; there is a fine line between enhancing the appearance and trying too hard!

–>Busty??…
DO choose a bathing suit top like you would choose your bra. We know the importance of a properly fitting bra in everyday life–the same goes for your beachwear. This will give you support and keep “the girls” in place while you frolic in the sun. Suits with thicker straps are also a good choice.

DON’T choose a string bikini or choose a suit that comes in a generic size like small, medium, large, etc.

–>Narrow Shoulders??…
DO
select a racerback top to make your shoulders seem wider or a suit that draws the eyes attention downward; maybe a nice V-neck or even a suit with ruffled straps.

DON’T
take the (V-neck) plunge to far…you want to be comfortable in your swimwear and not constantly worrying about ‘falling out’ or constantly be re-adjusting.

–>Broad Shoulders??…
DO choose a suit with an asymmetrical neckline to divert the eyes or a suit that is solid in colour but has panels along the side for an hourglass effect.

DON’T choose a bathing suit that has a neckline or striped pattern that cuts straight across the body.

–>Flat Bottom??…
DO embrace the frills, ruffles, bright colours and funky patterns and consider a slightly “skimpier” bottom.

DON’T automatically default to super full coverage bottoms.

–>Full Booty??…
DO rock a suit that offers more coverage on the bottom (in addition to being a solid colour) but spice up the ensemble with a patterned top.

DON’T rock a string bikini or one that is high cut; trust us they ride up and you spend more time re-adjusting than having fun. Also, don’t choose a suit that has a ruffled bottom!

–>Short Torso??…
DO opt for a bathing suit that will draw the eye to your shoulders (ruffles, halter style top or asymmetrical neckline) paired with some low rise bottoms.

DON’T opt high waisted bottoms.

–>Short Legs??…
DO choose a high cut suit or dare we say a thong.

DON’T choose a suit that is cut straight across.

–>Athletic Build??…
DO
go with swimsuit tops that have padded cups and come in feminine prints and/or bold colours.

DON’T
go with bandeaus, boy-cut shorts or one pieces.

In addition to body shapes and sizes, there are also a few other concerns that many of us have when shopping for suits. That being said, if you are worried about….

1. The Spare Tire aka the Muffin Top aka the Love Handles (or whatever cute nickname we give it): Go with high waisted bottoms that extend past the navel.
2. Thick thighs: Go with bottoms that offer more coverage; or even suits with a skirt.
3. Back Fat: Thick straps and suits with a high back is the answer to this problem.
4. Belly Pooch: One pieces with ruching or one pieces with funky necklines will divert attention from your belly.
5. Cellulite: Tankinis can go a long way to helping you cover this up…if you so choose!
6. Scars, stretch marks, psoriasis, body acne or other skin issues:  Use the variety of cuts, lengths, details and fabrics (such as mesh) available to your advantage to hide or protect these areas of your body if you want.
7. UV Protection: For those who are sun-sensitive, sun-conscious or burn easily going the long sleeved swim top route might be for you.

Based on the guide…
I would pick Tommy Bahama Pearl One-Piece swimsuit in black from Nordstrom!
