August Journal #1

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

Recently I got a random note from one of my students that he left on my desk.

Dear Mrs A,

Thanks for being the best teacher. You make my day better, especially when I’m feeling bad.

It was short, it was simple, it was sincere and so incredibly sweet. I love to hear feedback from my students. I strive to be the best for them and it’s nice to hear when I meet their needs. It’s nice that they can see how much I try to be my best self for them. I still have it pinned to the bulletin board behind my desk at school. Apart from that compliment, I love to hear my husband say that I look good. He’s an act of service type of guy so he doesn’t tend to laud compliments on me rather he does so much for me on a daily basis to show his love and affection so a verbal for of compliment just makes my heart so happy!

Terrific Tomatoes

It’s summer and you know what that means…tomatoes are ripe for the picking. Tomatoes are very beneficial to your health. They offer protection for brain, heart, and gut health. The vegetable, which is also considered a fruit, is a solid source of nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. To help you incorporate more tomatoes into your diet, I have found some amazing recipes over the years that I can’t wait to share with you!

August Goals: The Month of Miscellaneous Goals

One month left of summer vacation for me and I spent the first half working on school related tasks and chores around home. August for me has always been about “getting my shit together.” This list of three goals is quite a mish-mash.

  1. Finish home renovations!
-The new guest room and bathroom need to be completed; the common area downstairs needs to be set up. The basement needs to be cleaned of all the construction clutter. This may be tough since it hinges on other people. I hate being in the middle of renovations; it makes me anxious!
  2. Finish my summer reading list!
-I have five books left to finish from my list; somehow I don’t see I’ll have a problem with this one.
  3. Back to school personal prep!
-I need to carve out time to go shopping (with my niece) for our back to school clothes and I need to get a haircut –BADLY. I always wait too long and never get an appointment BEFORE school starts and sooner enough it becomes a “Christmas cut.”

July 2023 Accountability Post

We are half way through summer and my goodness has it ever gone fast! Since January I have been setting three small goals to accomplish each month; just because it is summer I didn’t take the month off from my goals; I kept going!

  1. Work Life Balance
*I have gotten so much done this month and I am really proud of myself. I have stuck to the time parameters of when I work but I still feel like all I have done so far this summer is work; which isn’t great.
  2. One Vacation
*I spent a couple days in Calgary with a friend, while my husband stayed home to work on home renovations; the guilt was extreme!
  3. De-Clutter
*I have made two trips to the dump and I feel like 30 pounds lighter after purging our home of all the stuff we no longer use. I only have two bedrooms, a linen closet and downstairs storage area left to go through!

What about you? How did you make out this month?

What to do in YYC?

We spent a few days in Calgary to relax and recharge; these are our “must do’s”…

  1. Stay on the Gold Floor and enjoy incredible amenities at the Fairmont Palliser.
*However, skip dining at The Hawthorne –Calgary’s food scene is on point, so go “off campus.” You could always start by walking down Stephen Avenue!
  2. See breathtaking views from the Calgary Tower
  3. Enjoy an equestrian event at Spruce Meadows
  4. Unwind while walking through Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
  5. Detour to Devonian Gardens; which is indoors; so its a nice rainy day activity!
  6. Traverse the Peace Bridge
  7. Step back in time with a journey to either Fort Calgary or Heritage Park Historical Village
  8. Experience the offerings of Olympic Plaza
  9. Explore the exhibitions of the Glenbow Museum

July Journal # 4

Are you more like your mother or your father? Or are you more like someone else?

I noticed common tendencies between myself and my parents. I always wanted to be just like my dad and I never wanted to resemble my mom in any way. I try really hard to be my own person though. Since my dad died when I was 16 I have a sort of “frozen in time” picture and understanding of who he was as a person. I see in my mom many traits and ways of being that I don’t want to possess or end up doing or being. My emotional connection is fraught with her and I don’t see her much so I think that the absence helps me be my own person. Basically the distance for me sort of prevents her rubbing off on me. I do realize how horrible this sounds but it really is a long, long story and I hope no one’s judging me because familiar relationships are tough; they’re tricky. Sometimes they only make sense to the people directly involved.
