Best Restaurants in YEG

For Pizza
I highly recommend Parlour Italian Kitchen + Bar!
Their website features the following quote, “Those who eat well, live well!” You most certainly will eat INCREDIBLY well at Parlour! They do offer more than pizza but I absolutely LOVE their pizza. I recently tried the Sonny Boy; it has Calabrese salami, fiore di latte, mushroom and fresh thyme –it was the prefect level of spice. I also tried the Peach + Balsamic; this uniquely flavoured pizza has honey roasted peaches, red onion, fior di latte, balsamic pearls and arugula. Other must try pizzas include: The Hangover, the Proscuitto and the Truffle pizzas!

For Vegan Cuisine
I highly recommend Copper Branch!
My best friend and I love to hit up a vegetarian or vegan restaurant at least once during our girl’s weekends. We recently tried Copper Branch because we really appreciated their mission statement which is to, “empower, energize and make people feel their best, [to] serve [the] community whole, plant based,” foods that are not only good for the consumer but the planet as well. It was very difficult to choose what to get, everything looked and sounded amazing. You can’t go wrong with the Aristotle Power Bowl (I got mine with the tempeh) and the Copper Deluxe Burger (on a potato bun)! The online ordering system was a breeze as well; so extra points! There is a lot of ability to customize!

For Fine Dining
I highly recommend Butternut Tree!
This beautiful restaurant is located adjacent to the Legislature grounds; the views are splendid. I really love the concept of Butternut Tree because it is all about Canadian cuisine. This place would be an awesome wedding/reception venue; perhaps I should convince my husband that we should do a vow renewal. From the a la carte menu choose the Pacific Steamed Mussels & Clams to start and the Green Alder-Pine Beef Striploin as the entree. To finish your dining experience, you must have the Buttermilk Panna Cotta.

For Dessert
I highly recommend Art of Cake!
This awesome cafe and bakery is also licenced so you can always opt for a mimosa while enjoying their delicious confections or sip on a craft brew while having lunch. Pre-pandemic they offered high tea! I missed out on this, so I hope I get the chance to partake in this soon. My favourite sweet treats from this establishment are numerous, but my top three include the: lemon tart, chocolate cream puff and the cinnamon bun. However, the cinnamon buns are only available on weekends. Remember to get here early before everything gets snapped up!

Popular Culture

My best friend came up to visit/look after me while I was healing post surgery; we usually always end up reflecting back on our friendship and our youth; we get all sappy and nostalgic.  Since I am laid up on the couch, with lots of time on my hands and I am procrastinating about school work I fell down the rabbit hole while Googling stuff from my childhood. And of course, it’s easy to get distracted by (and to be frank, a little insulted by) Instagram reels and TikToks that point out the fact that some of my beloved pop culture items and icons are turning 20 years old or older; insert scared face here!

At this stage in my life right now, many of things I loved are coming back into fashion. As they always say; “what is old is new again.”

Tamagotchi
For those of you unfamiliar with this addictive toy, they are,  “a small alien species that deposit an egg on Earth to see what life was like, and it is up to the player to raise the egg into an adult creature. The creature goes through several stages of growth, and will develop differently depending on the care the player provides, with better care it results in an adult creature that is smarter, happier, and requires less attention.” This was a status symbol among my peers in grade 6; I wanted one so badly, I begged my parents relentlessly. I played with it long after it was no longer “cool.” These devices ended up being banned at my elementary school because they were so distracting –much like phones are today! Having lived through the hype of this, I don’t think any phone app could ever replace this classic egg shaped, key ring pet simulator.

Skip It
Time Magazine actually includes the Skip It on their “100 Greatest Toys Ever” list and it persisted until 2009; however, I had outgrown it well before that time. My Skip It was pink and had the counter; which was pretty advanced because in its original form it looked more like a Wiffle ball attached to rope with an ankle ring. I got mine from my older cousins as a hand-me -down; most of their hand-me-downs were as the kids back in the 90’s would say, “lame,” but this…this Skip It was GLORIOUS in my eyes! I spent hours playing with this thing; it was better than traditional jump-rope. I can still hear the sound of it spinning on the concrete pad in the backyard.

Blockbuster Video Trips
I LOVED going to Blockbuster video to rent movies; first VHS and then DVD. As awesome as Netflix and Amazon Prime are, there was just something about heading off with my friends to pick out a movie or two for a sleepover. You ended up discovering some really great movies (some by total fluke and other by HUMAN recommendations). Blockbuster had snacks as well! I enjoyed slapping down my very own Blockbuster card on the counter each and every time (I don’t know why this was so satisfying, but it was). Renting movies was a cheap alternative to going to a movie theater (you could rent sometimes several movies for less than 5$).

Playdium
My cousins and I spent a lot of time at this massive entertainment center at the mall. It was and is owned by Cineplex. Some locations are still open but our local haunt was closed down. Basically, this was an enormous arcade; it kind of reminds me of a casino but for youth and teens. You used a “credit card” which was pre-loaded with a set amount or time allotment. You could also pig out on food and even have your birthday party there! I spent hours playing air hockey (and having my butt kicked by my cousins), racing cars, playing pinball, shooting ducks and of course honing my horrendous Dance Dance Revolution skills.  It was an epic time!

Corduroy
Affectionately referred to as “Cords.” This almost velvety fabric makes me happy; I love the way it feels and I still fondly remember the sound it would make as I walked down the hallway to class. It makes my heart happy to see this coming back in the form of dresses, jackets, accessories like hats and even shoes. As HerWorld says, “corduroy is the new denim.”

Butterfly Clips
These were such a big part of my hair styling repertoire (rows, never scattered) that I can’t help but miss it. You saw these clips on all the big name celebrities from Sarah Michelle Gellar to JLO to Jennifer Aniston; who of course we all know was a major hair influencer –everyone had to have the iconic layered “Rachel” hair cut. The clips came in every colour and some were sparkly and some were not. These sometimes tacky clips bring me back to Friday nights with my junior high school friends getting ready for dances.

Now Music CDs
Officially called: Now That’s What I Call Music! is a series of various artists compilation albums released worldwide; for us in Canada the height was 1996-2009; but the first version dates back to 1988. The number of albums vary country to country and edition to edition; for example in Canada the “Current Series” is at 28, there is also a 2 album “Then” series, the “Country Series” features 11 albums. There are 16 albums included in the “Special Editions” series covering a variety of genres and the “Dance Series” has 5 albums. We blasted these tunes ALL the time and sang along heartily! I always got a NOW! CD in my stocking at Christmas.

Rainforest Cafe
This jungle themed restaurant which served delicious food from seafood, beef, and chicken to pastas and pizzas. It opened in 1998 and sadly closed in 2001. There still are some locations open today. I used to love going to have lunch with my friends here; it made us feel grown up. The restaurant is created to look like a tropical rainforest complete with flora and fauna, there was mist and water features, like waterfalls and “pools,” also part of the ambience was the soundscape. You really felt like you were immersed in a rainforest. What would a tropical rainforest themed restaurant be without animals… The animatronics were incredible; there were elephants, gorillas, tigers, leopards, crocodiles, frogs, iguanas, butterflies, and tropical birds, fish! My least favourite of course, were the snakes.

Cartoons
Oh the hours I spent watching: Rugrats, Animaniacs, DuckTales, Doug, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, Tiny Toons Adventures, Dexter’s Laboratory, Pinky & the Brain, TailSpin, Magic School Bus, Darkwing Duck, Sailor Moon, Goof Troop and Captain Planet… I can still relive these online via YouTube or other streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ BUT there was something about sitting cross-legged in front of the TV on Saturday mornings!

“Primitive” Forms of Communication

I truly treasure my childhood because I was free from the chains of a phone. If you wanted to communicate with your friends you called them on the landline, sought them out at recess or lunch time, you passed notes in class. Now, I see so many kids addicted to their phones; their lives literally revolve around them and heaven forbid the battle you have to fight when you make them put it away or confiscate it during class. Many are not communicating with anyone; they are mindlessly playing games or scrolling on social media. Worse yet, they are sitting right next to someone and texting them. In a time of such technological connection we are so disconnected and isolated from each other –it is truly scary.

What popular culture items & icons do you miss the most?
What ones do you wish made a comeback?

Lovely Lemonade

There is nothing sweeter than sitting on the deck in the summertime, sipping on some lovely lemonade. In addition to the sweet yet tart traditional LEMON flavour, I absolutely love: watermelon and blueberry. I know these may seem like odd flavour choices, but trust me, they are AWESOME.

My go-to recipe for traditional lemonade comes from Bon Appétit. For me, BA’s “Best Lemonade” serves as a base for the other drink concoctions I am going to present to you. These drinks can be served both alcoholic and virgin. Sometimes when I feel fancy or I am entertaining I like to add champagne for a riff on a mimosa!

Watermelon Lemonade

Ingredients…
1 pitcher of BA’s Best Lemonade
2 cups cubed watermelon
Ice

Directions…
1. Prepare lemonade as per Bon Appétit recipe
2. In a blender, puree the watermelon until it is smooth.
3. Strain through a fine sieve; to get rid of seeds
4. To prevent this delicious drink from becoming too watery, it is best to serve it right away; put ice into individual glasses, add 3-4 tablespoons of puree to each then fill the glass with your lemonade; stir & enjoy!

Blueberry Lemonade

Ingredients…
1 pitcher of BA’s Best Lemonade
2 cups fresh blueberries
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 cup water
Ice

Directions…
1. Prepare lemonade as per Bon Appétit recipe
2. In a blender, puree & mix blueberries, honey & water
3. Strain through a fine sieve; to get rid of any ‘lumps’
4. Add puree to your pitcher of lemonade, serve with ice.
*If you have left over blueberries you can add them to your glasses. EVEN BETTER: a neat touch is to use “blueberry ice cubes’ ahead of time; with whole blueberries!
*This recipe also tastes amazing if you muddle a little mint in each glass before adding the ice & lemonade

Beyond the Blizzard

Our province experienced a major heat wave this week; the AC units, fans and kiddie pools flew off the shelves. It was unbearable, but it was THE perfect excuse to eat lots of ice cream! It made me think about the time when my bestie got an ice cream maker for her birthday and we experimented with “cereal milk ice cream.” While our attempt wouldn’t make it on our list of favourites we do know of a few places where you can get excellent ice cream…and no, Dairy Queen isn’t one of them!

Village Ice Cream in Calgary
They make handcrafted ice cream starting with a dense and creamy base (made with a surprising amount of egg yolks, cream and sugar) in 10 flavours available year round, with a bunch of seasonal flavours and non-dairy, vegan and gluten free options such as: Grahamtellow, Cherry Cola, Salty Malty Pretzel, Chocolate Coconut Milk, Banana Split, Huckleberry, Passionfruit and Strawberry Shortcake. The smell of freshly made waffle cones will make your mouth water.

The Big Moo Ice Cream Parlour @ Sylvan Lake
This ice cream parlour is an institution in Sylvan Lake! They have at least 80 flavours of ice cream in addition to burgers, wraps and rice bowls. Nothing like strolling along the beach with a delicious ice cream in hand. You can get a basic two or three scoop cone or a whimsical ice cream concoction with sprinkles, candy kabobs and cookies.

Daisy McBeans @ Pigeon Lake
A cozy but bustling restaurant serves up hard and soft ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes and frozen yogurt in addition to a hearty meals and great coffee. After enjoying your ice cream, you’ll find a cute little surprise at the bottom of your cone…a jelly bean.

Marble Slab
Marble Slab made its way to Alberta in 2003 from Texas; this frozen slab concept creamery features 50 flavours and 30 kinds of mix-ins (fruits, nuts, candies, chocolate and cookies). You pick the ice cream, mix-ins and they fold everything together right before your eyes. In addition to ice cream, splits, floats, smoothies and sundaes, Marble Slab also has crumbles, cupcakes and pies made from ice cream! It is truly THE ice cream experience.

Pickling Recipe

Planting a garden with my family is something I look forward to every spring/summer. We plant onions, carrots, peas, green and yellow beans, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes and potatoes in our garden. We have fruit trees and bushes in a small orchard outback. Our family loves to graze on the fruits of our labours when hanging out outside. There is nothing more delicious than garden fresh vegetables and fruit. I blanch and freeze bags and bags of produce. I make muffins with the Saskatoon berries and other fruits. We base our meals around what we picked fresh from the garden and pair it with wild game meat each day. I make zucchini pie using an awesome recipe from The Kitchen Frau. I could go on and on; ultimately the possibilities of what to do with your bounty are endless. However, one thing that I learned from my aunt was how to pickle. I so enjoyed spending days upon days with her canning and preserving.

At first, pickling may seem daunting but I assure it is NOT! So, invite a few friends over and have a pickling party!

1. Wash the mason jars, lids and rings. Make sure you rinse them well and allow them to dry. If you use the dishwasher make sure that your jars, lids and rings are the ONLY thing in it. I usually have more jars prepared than I need, just in case.

2. Wash and dry your vegetables of choice. Carrots need to be peeled, beans need to be trimmed. Cut them down to size if necessary.

3. In each jar, place your desired flavourings. I usually put a sprig of dill and clove of garlic in each of my jars. If you fancy yourself an extreme bean, perfect for a Ceasar try adding red pepper flakes to the jars.

4. Pack the jar tightly with your vegetables, but don’t smash them. Make sure to leave about a ½ inch space from the rim.

Recipe
8 cups of water
3 ¼ cups of vinegar (7% pickling type)
8 tbsp of kosher salt
6 bay leaves
12 whole black peppercorns-Bring to a boil in a large pot

Directions
-Fill your jars that have been washed, flavoured and packed one to the top.
-Gently tap the jars against the counter to remove any air bubbles and add more liquid if needed.
-Place the lids on and screw the rings on tightly.
-Wrap your jars in a cocoon of towels/blankets on the counter; this will keep them warm and help them to seal.
-Next day, check the jars to see if the seals have locked. Once locked, label them with the date and store in your larder to enjoy throughout the year.

In an effort to eat better I decided to substitute some of my meat heavy recipes for meatless ones. I discovered an incredible recipe for carrot casserole; this recipe makes for a great side dish or an entree.

1/3 cup finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 cup fine dry bread crumbs
