Bathing Suit Guide

Summer is here so it’s time to bust out the bathing suits!… However, it isn’t that easy, some of us experience a lot of frustration trying to pick out the most flattering bathing suit for our figure. Have no fear, I am here to share a few helpful tips to take the stress out of shopping…

–>Small Bust??…
DO pick a swimsuit top that is either padded; has contouring features like boning, has a bold pattern or ruffles to add some “heft” to your chest!

DON’T go overboard with ruffles/extra material; there is a fine line between enhancing the appearance and trying too hard!

–>Busty??…
DO choose a bathing suit top like you would choose your bra. We know the importance of a properly fitting bra in everyday life–the same goes for your beachwear. This will give you support and keep “the girls” in place while you frolic in the sun. Suits with thicker straps are also a good choice.

DON’T choose a string bikini or choose a suit that comes in a generic size like small, medium, large, etc.

–>Narrow Shoulders??…
DO
select a racerback top to make your shoulders seem wider or a suit that draws the eyes attention downward; maybe a nice V-neck or even a suit with ruffled straps.

DON’T
take the (V-neck) plunge to far…you want to be comfortable in your swimwear and not constantly worrying about ‘falling out’ or constantly be re-adjusting.

–>Broad Shoulders??…
DO choose a suit with an asymmetrical neckline to divert the eyes or a suit that is solid in colour but has panels along the side for an hourglass effect.

DON’T choose a bathing suit that has a neckline or striped pattern that cuts straight across the body.

–>Flat Bottom??…
DO embrace the frills, ruffles, bright colours and funky patterns and consider a slightly “skimpier” bottom.

DON’T automatically default to super full coverage bottoms.

–>Full Booty??…
DO rock a suit that offers more coverage on the bottom (in addition to being a solid colour) but spice up the ensemble with a patterned top.

DON’T rock a string bikini or one that is high cut; trust us they ride up and you spend more time re-adjusting than having fun. Also, don’t choose a suit that has a ruffled bottom!

–>Short Torso??…
DO opt for a bathing suit that will draw the eye to your shoulders (ruffles, halter style top or asymmetrical neckline) paired with some low rise bottoms.

DON’T opt high waisted bottoms.

–>Short Legs??…
DO choose a high cut suit or dare we say a thong.

DON’T choose a suit that is cut straight across.

–>Athletic Build??…
DO
go with swimsuit tops that have padded cups and come in feminine prints and/or bold colours.

DON’T
go with bandeaus, boy-cut shorts or one pieces.

In addition to body shapes and sizes, there are also a few other concerns that many of us have when shopping for suits. That being said, if you are worried about….

1. The Spare Tire aka the Muffin Top aka the Love Handles (or whatever cute nickname we give it): Go with high waisted bottoms that extend past the navel.
2. Thick thighs: Go with bottoms that offer more coverage; or even suits with a skirt.
3. Back Fat: Thick straps and suits with a high back is the answer to this problem.
4. Belly Pooch: One pieces with ruching or one pieces with funky necklines will divert attention from your belly.
5. Cellulite: Tankinis can go a long way to helping you cover this up…if you so choose!
6. Scars, stretch marks, psoriasis, body acne or other skin issues:  Use the variety of cuts, lengths, details and fabrics (such as mesh) available to your advantage to hide or protect these areas of your body if you want.
7. UV Protection: For those who are sun-sensitive, sun-conscious or burn easily going the long sleeved swim top route might be for you.

Based on the guide…
I would pick Tommy Bahama Pearl One-Piece swimsuit in black from Nordstrom!

Fashion Icons

I follow a number of fashion blogs including; Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor, What Kate Wore, What Meghan Wore, Carly the Prepster, The Budget Fashionista, Simply Elsa and MANY more. My best friend and I also enjoy analyzing the fashions worn by celebrities at weddings and award shows. We both have our own fashion and designer preferences. You can also see my love of fashion through my various “Outfit Challenge” posts. I thought it might be a neat idea to do a feature about (and celebrate) the icons I look up to for fashion.

1. Audrey Hepburn
After watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s as a young teenage girl; I fell in love with the idea of the Little Black Dress (LBD) that has become synonymous with Audrey Hepburn. Whenever I have a formal event to go to I ALWAYS default to a black dress. I dress it up with statement jewellery. Wearing a LBD gives you a lot of fashion flexibility; you don’t have to worry about matching, it is flattering for every skin tone and figure, it makes you look elegant and classy and lastly but most importantly: it  NEVER goes out of style.

2. Jackie O
This fashion icon’s oversized sunglasses, and peacoats caught my eye and something I like to emulate in my everyday fashion choices. Many looks can be achieved with a peacoat; from tomboy to dressy. My favourite off the clock peacoat ensemble is a black sweater and jeans with flats or boots. My favourite work peacoat ensemble is with well fitting dress pants, flowy blouse, heeled boots or wedges. The key for me is finding a flattering cut/length and buying it in several colours: black, brown/beige and a funky colour. Oversized sunglasses are an enduring favourite because they add star quality, make our faces appear smaller and allow us the freedom to go sans make-up in addition to extra protection from the sun.

3. Kate Middleton (The Duchess of Cambridge)
As an avid reader of What Kate Wore and being a huge Kate Middleton fan I know that that lady LOVES her wedges! This was a fashion bandwagon I jumped on in 2011. I even went so far as to order a pair of Dune wedges (the ones that Kate wore when she visited Australia with Prince William) for my wedding. I have wedges with the espadrille sole and with the cork sole. Wedges are comfortable and are perfect for both dressy and casual occasions.

4. Meghan Markle (The Duchess of Sussex)
You can’t possibly deny that Meghan Markle’s purse/handbag game is STRONG! From clutches to designer totes she has an enviable collection. My all time favourite Meghan pieces include:
-Givenchy’s black satin minaudière with jewel clasp clutch
-Everlane’s Cognac tote
-Stella McCartney’s Falabella shaggy deer faux leather reversible tote
-Victoria Beckham’s vanity top handle leather tote
-Givenchy’s GV3 Mini in grained leather and suede cross-body / clutch bag
-Gabriela Hearst’s demi satin tote
-J Crew’s bag fan rattan clutch,
-Mulberry’s Clifton style bag
-Altuzarra ‘Ghianda’ top handle mini bag in navy
-Fendi’s Peekaboo Essential in black calfskin
-Carolina Herrera’s ivory and gold clutch from the Trooping of the Colour (June 2018)

5. Elsa Schiaparelli
When it comes to jewellery I am a little bit of a magpie (something my husband reminds me of frequently). There are some well made and beautiful costume jewellery out there which allows me to add some sparkle to my outfits and life without the hefty price tag. My jewellery tastes are inspired by Elsa Schiaparelli because of her whimsical nature.

Happy Third Anniversary, Harry & Meghan

Ten years ago my best friend and I spent the very early hours of April 29th together watching Prince William marry Miss. Catherine Middleton in Westminster Abbey. Both fans of all things royalty; especially the British monarchy we decided to celebrate in style. Mimosas were concocted and a traditional English breakfast was prepared and savoured between our squeals of delight!

With the third wedding anniversary of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle on May 19 I figured I would flashback. For their wedding, my best friend and I were unable to get together but we still celebrated with a continuous stream of text messages.

She celebrated in Calgary while I celebrated in Falun; by waking up at 3am and brewing myself a VERY strong cup of coffee and snuggling in on the couch. My puppy snored away on the floor beside me. I must confess it was quite a different experience watching it on my own, despite texting her like every other second. I really wished we had been able to spend this momentous occasion together.

Among my wedding highlights…

1. Title
I was very eager to wake up to find out what title the Queen was going to bestow on Harry and his new wife. It had been long speculated that they would become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, however, nothing is final until the Palace announces it. The Queen could have potentially made him the Duke of Clarence; since it too was available.

But, the choice of Sussex is most fitting. It has been noted since the last person to hold this title was anti-slavery campaigner and supporter of rights for Catholics and Jews. Both Harry and Meghan have made it (and will continue to make it) their life’s work to champion the rights of others. As well, it has been reported that Meghan’s mother’s family had been slaves on the cotton plantations in Georgia. Meghan is descended from a long line of trailblazers, so it would make sense that she will be the FIRST woman to be the Duchess of Sussex.

Harry was also made Earl of Dumbarton (for use in Scotland) and Baron of Kilkeel (for use in Northern Ireland). Meghan’s corresponding titles include: Countess of Dumbarton and Baroness of Kilkeel.

2. Tiara
There was as much speculation about the tiara as there was about the dress. Meghan chose Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau (1932). It most certainly held its own underneath that veil; and sparkled on that long carriage ride through the streets of Windsor. Some were shocked she didn’t wear a tiara associated with Diana, however, I think this day needed to be about Harry and Meghan. They included her, probably in many ways that the public don’t fully realize; as those touches wouldn’t be obvious to us. Her engagement ring, designed by Harry with the inclusion of two diamonds from Diana’s collection was much closer to her heart (literally; re: vena amoris) than a diamond tiara. More about the tiara can be found on a fantastic blog: From Her Majesty’s Jewel Vault.

3. Uniform
There is something to be said about a man in uniform. Around the world, hearts broke as the handsome Harry got married and was OFFICIALLY off the market. Personally, I never questioned whether or not Harry would wear a uniform. He is a distinguished military officer in his own right and he dedicates much time and energy to working with veterans. It was at the Invictus Games that Harry and Meghan made their debut in Toronto. On Instagram @KensingtonRoyal (formally) announced that “Both Prince Harry and The Duke of Cambridge will wear the frockcoat uniform of the Blues and Royals. Her Majesty The Queen gave her permission for Prince Harry to get married in his uniform. Both uniforms were tailored at Dege & Skinner on Savile Row.” I thought it was especially sweet that, unlike at William’s wedding, the brothers were matching. Intentional or not, it demonstrated the deep bond they both share.

4. Best Dressed
My top three stand out guests were…

Amal Clooney, in a yellow dress with side drape by Stella McCartney and hat by Stephen Jones. Husband, George accented her ensemble with his splashes of a more subdued shade of yellow.

Kitty Spencer, in an emerald green slim-fit dress featuring bold flower print at the bottom by Dolce & Gabbana, topped off with a matching Philip Treacy fascinator and a diamond choker I am in envy of.

Karen Spencer, in her violet Pamella Roland dress with bolero cape. I simply love her fascinator as well.

5. Tender Moments
Harry and Meghan’s lovely day was full of genuine love and sweetness that is expected of a wedding. Yes, it was a royal wedding; there was pomp and circumstance to some extent but ultimately it was a deeply personal wedding that blended tradition and modernity, British and American perfectly. This love and sweetness was not only reserved between the bride and groom despite there being many examples of it.

-It was rather upsetting for the future Duchess of Sussex to have to announce to the world (just days before her wedding) that her father was not able to walk her down the aisle for health reasons. However, it was incredibly touching that she asked her future father-in-law, Prince Charles. He looked so proud and happy to fill in.

-Harry lifting Meghan’s stunning cathedral veil to reveal her beaming smile and gorgeous tiara. And of course this led to the infamous “lip bite” from Harry. We didn’t experience this moment at William and Kate’s wedding, as her father, Michael performed this task. It was pointed out that perhaps the length of the veil was a subtle nod to Diana’s own veil; whether or not that was the case, that veil was simply amazing!

-While Harry and Meghan sat listening to Rev. Curry performing his sermon, the couple sat holding hands (as they did for basically the entire morning), but at one point Harry looked down at Meghan’s hand and fiddled slightly with the engagement ring as they both remembered Diana. The look of love between them could have melted the iciest and most skeptical of hearts.

-Mike Tindall lovingly resting his hand on pregnant wife, Zara’s stomach; looking at her, probably remembering the happiness they felt on their own wedding day and thinking forward to the next chapter of their lives.
-The Duchess of Cambridge only 4 weeks postpartum, still in the habit of resting her own hand on her bump did so during one of the songs, probably missing her newborn son, Louis, greatly. She also shared a sweet moment with Princess Charlotte at the end of the ceremony on the steps. Stooping to her young daughter’s level and either pointing out the horse drawn carriage,  reminding her to wave or remarking on how beautiful her new, Aunt looked.

-My all time FAVOURITE tender moment was the exchange of rings. Yes, I said RINGS…plural. Harry bucked tradition and Meghan placed a platinum band on his finger. Harry looked very happy to be receiving it and truly committing to his new wife.

Outfit Under $50

I wanted to challenge ourselves to create an outfit for $50 or less that reflected my individual style for summertime. You can still look and feel like a million bucks despite budgetary constraints.

Dress: Tiered Fit & Flare Halter Dress
From — Ricki’s
Cost — $19.99
Why — This cute little shift dress with floral pattern is perfect for work and play. You can change up the shoes from flat strappy sandals, to canvas/cork wedges or a sexy pair of black stilettos. Shopping online can be a pain but it is great for a budget conscious shopper especially with free in-store pick-up.

Shoes: Ankle Strap Sandal
From — Ardene
Cost — $17.90
Why — The feminine blush colour of these sandals compliment the flowers on the dress. I love Ardene shoes; they are comfortable and they last! In addition to huge variety, Ardene normally has great sales, so it is a great store to stock up on shoes.

Accessory: Cezanne Crystal Rectangular Studs
From — HBC
Cost — $7.50
Why — The dress has enough flair with the large floral pattern so I would choose some understated earrings with a neutral colouring. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love looking for bargains. The sale racks have yielded quite a few gems for me.
Total including GST = $ 47.66

Happy shopping!!!

High End Fashion Wishlist

We follow or read about iconic fashionistas and covet the designer clothes they wear so flawlessly. We thought it would be fun to throw the budget out the window and dream a little.

The Veronica from Jenny Packham is a peony pink silk chiffon pleated gown with embellished lace bodice and it would most DEFINITELY break the bank as it retails for £3,500.

With it I would pair it with the Mimi 100 sandals in Anthracite by Jimmy Choo ($1,025 CDN) and the Ellipse Platinum (glitter) Clutch also by Jimmy Choo ($1,050 CDN).

So, if money was no object…what would you wear?

November Outfit from Ricki’s Shopping Spree

Top: Long Sleeve Cuffed V-Neck Top
Cost: $42.90
Why: I really like the floating dandelion print. The shirt looks great with everything; pair of dress pants or jeans and it goes from business to casual simply from tucking or un-tucking the top.

Bottoms: Black High Rise Jeggings
Cost: $59.90
Why: These are great for a casual Friday at work, going out for a fun night with the girls or on a date. They also create a slimming effect; much needed since I’m suffering from the “Quarantine 15.”

Coat: Teddy Bear Faux Fur Coat
Cost: $109.90
Why: It is a little bit of colour for this outfit and super comfy; it comes in a soft blush or camel. A lot of the time when I find something that I like and it fits well I will buy it in a bunch of different colours. I couldn’t resist this coat it is so soft and cozy!

Jewellery: Rainbow Crystal Dome Stud Earrings
Cost: $16.90
Why: With the beautiful detailing on this shirt I would probably skip the necklace and with the cuff sleeves I wouldn’t want a bracelet either. So I picked these beautiful earrings to finish off my look.

For shoes; I’d probably pair my favourite pair of grey or black “shooties”
