Country Crafts

The count down to Spring Break is ON! It is at that time (and during my summers off) that I am able to find plenty of inspiration and natural materials to work with it is easy to get “my craft on.” Included are a few of the rustic decor items that adorn our home.

Wedding Signs
These are very easy to make and everyone who I have made one for has loved this personalized gift. You can make the wood sign yourself or purchase a pre-made one from Michael’s. Use stencils and a bit of paint to customize your sign. Our’s hangs in our room.

Centerpieces
Although we used these at our wedding, they still look good even on our kitchen table. Using different sized mason jars I hot glue-gunned strips of ribbon or fabric around the mouths, filled them with clear stones, water and a floating candle. My husband cut the discs for me from some trees that had been toppled over in a windstorm. These can be accented with other candles or greenery.

Painted Discs
Following our wedding we were left with a bunch of wood discs; some of our guests took them home, some of the discs ended up as cake stands and others ended up being used to level out the trailer but some I turned into decorative pieces for our home and gifts. My favourite one: I painted the centre white and meticulously stencilled and painted a deer silhouette.

Monogrammed Stumps
I can’t take credit for this. This was all my husband’s idea; in fact it was a surprise feature at our wedding that were placed at the head of the aisle. He torched our initials on it; it was very sweet. They look great at an outside entryway.

Reindeer
A nice walk in the woods and a quick rummage through your wood pile is needed for this project. I had a friend cut holes for the antlers, neck and legs then I stuck in the pieces adhering them with wood glue.

Antler Lamp
Using sheds I found; I played around with the orientation of the antlers to find out the most sturdy combination. Carefully my uncle drilled a hole for the light socket and cord and attached them for me. I hot glue-gunned the antlers into place. If you can’t find any sheds, artificial ones can be used as well. I picked up a lampshade for cheap at Wal-Mart.

Tall Pinecone Vases
I found cylindrical vases from Ikea make great accent pieces on either side of a fireplace, television or doorway. If you don’t want something as tall you can always scale them down for a great decor item for a shelf or table. I collected pinecones from the front yard and filled three vases to the top. From Dollarama and Michael’s I was able to find some great silk flowers.

Terra Cotta Stacks
This was something that I stole from Pinterest. My husband drove a piece of rebar into the ground for me, then I slid the 12” pot down to the bottom to act as the base and filled it with soil. Next was the 10” pot, slid down to rest on the soil of the first one but tilted to the side. I filled it with soil and carried on with the 8” but tilted it in the other direction and so on with the 6” and then 4”. I planted seeds in mine and they didn’t grow as I hoped. This year I am going to try it with bedding plants as they will help keep the soil in place during our awful rainstorms.

Garden Signs
I don’t know about you but after planting 14 rows of carrots, onions, peas, green beans, yellow beans, zucchini and potatoes I sometimes forget the order in which I planted them (until they finally start growing). Paper seed packets on wooden stakes always just disintegrated in the rain so I got creative. I found some really cute and cheap wood plaques at Michael’s and attached them to garden stakes. I painted the backgrounds white, then carefully painted cartoon vegetables on them and wrote their names. I sprayed them with a weatherproof varnish.

Party Planning: Valentine’s Day

Although my best friend is an event planner, I love entertaining. What better excuse to have a party than Valentine’s Day; especially since some restrictions are going to be lifted soon. According to Katie Sweeney of MyDomaine fame, all parties have NINE essential elements

1. An Enticing Invitation
Normally, I just create an event on Facebook and invite all our friends, or shoot them a quick text. But I thought it might be fun to send out formal invites (mailed and/or hand delivered). Vistaprint is a super cheap place to get professionally made stationary quickly. I love sending out handmade invitations as they are a sweet and cute gesture. For this party, I picked a chocolate box themed invitation.

2. An Interesting Group of Guests
Easily accomplished because our friends, family and coworkers are awesome and come from all walks of life. I thought it would be neat to stick to 14 guests; as a tie in to the date.

3. Festive Decor
It can be easy to go overboard. I LOVE Michael’s and Dollarama; they are my first go-to stores when shopping for party decor. Fresh flowers add such a beautiful touch to any party. I selected 2 bouquets of a dozen roses each (mulberry margarita purple) to put in frosted mason jars with the word LOVE printed in gold for the dining room and living room coffee table.

And I also picked up 2 full bouquets of white carnations to put in short square clear glass vases for the side counters and tables. The contrast in type of flower and vessel is pretty. Throughout the kitchen and living room (we have an open plan home) I like to place silver and gold votive holders (Ashland brand from Michael’s) for my flame-less tealights. This creates a soothing and slightly romantic atmosphere.

In addition to the candles ‘strewn’ around the room I also placed bowls of individually wrapped candy (raspberry hearts, chocolate kisses, sweetheart candies and Valentines coloured candy corn). Bulk Barn is an incredible place!

We have a gorgeous handcrafted wood cookie table, so I never like to cover it with a tablecloth so I picked up a lace table runner from Amazon. No party is complete without streamers. I chose pale pink and white. And nothing says ‘Welcome to my Valentine’s Day Party’ like confetti balloons (which I absolutely LOVE).

4. A Lively Playlist
Spotify has become my new new favourite app; I was slow to discover it. I put a mixture of songs/genres that everyone enjoys and stayed away mushy love songs which I thought would put everyone to sleep. The music is more for background noise than actual dancing.

5. Thoughtful Details
Everyone loves a party favour. I ordered some chocolate rose and chocolate lip lollipops from Purdy’s (as an anchor to my invitation); for people to take home with them at the end of the night with a personalized name tag.

6. Delicious Food
Most of our friends have kids, so I figured most would like to enjoy an early dinner by themselves and then stop by for snacks and drinks at our place. I always go overboard on the food…it never fails.

According to whatscookingamerica.com, for 14-16 guests you should serve 5 appetizer. I am currently cooking my way through my newest Pioneer Woman cookbook so this party is the perfect opportunity to try out new appetizers. My menu includes: pimento cheese; served in mini red peppers and for spreading on crackers, watermelon feta bites, tortilla pinwheels, bacon wrapped dates, salad on a stick, barbeque chicken wings and a shrimp ring.

7. Potent Cocktails
We always BYOB to parties; however, I wanted to do a signature cocktail for the ladies and one for the gentlemen. I opted for easy to make recipes because I didn’t want to bartend all night. As always, I want our guests to make themselves at home and help themselves. I also make a point of serving drinks in actual glasses rather than plastic solo cups. A pitcher of watermelon margaritas and a salt rimming station will be set up for the ladies and for the gents: the classic Old Fashioned

8. An Element of Surprise
Even though most of my friends would consider the party favour as a surprise, but I wanted to do something special for this special party. I’m splurging for this! I’m ordering a cake from the Duchess Bake Shop. But I can’t decide… the Fig, Pear & Blackberry Cheesecake is so tempting, but then again so are the Duke Cake and the Duchess Cake.

9. A Group Bonding Activity
Our group loves playing games or watching hockey together and a lot of the time we do both while catching up with each other. So if there happens to be an important game on, I’ll tune into that for our guests (it’s definitely a hit with the husbands). Another much loved activity is Cards Against Humanity (especially later in the evening). Depending on the size of the guest list you can even set up a few ‘games’ stations and people can move between them throughout the night. Even picking up a silly V-Day game from Dollarama can yield lots fun and lots of laughs.

Book Recommendations

I have been a bookworm from an early age; every time there was a Scholastic book order or book fair at school my mom overindulged me. I spent summers devouring book after book. Even now my husband and I have five full bookcases and books squirrelled away elsewhere. When I first thought about doing a blog post about my favourite books I felt a sense of panic…which ones should I choose? How many books are too many for a “short list”? I am not quite sure how I managed this, but I was able to pick four from my extensive collection.

Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie

I am an Agatha Christie superfan. I have ALL of her novels and I watch ALL of the television adaptations of them. This particular novel was the first of her’s that I read; and it got me hooked. The setting which is described in painstaking detail transports you to Iraq. Christie’s meticulous crafting of the character of her Belgian detective will excite and intrigue you. In this 1936 Hercule Poirot mystery, Amy Leatheran realizes that there is something malevolent happening at an archaeological dig to Dr. Leidner’s wife, Louise. Louise has become plagued by awful hallucinations while tensions mount between members of the group. It is up to Poirot to figure it all out and prevent further devastation.

Coppermine by Keith Ross Leckie

This book was recommended to me by a former student of mine who was participating in a book club. She thought it would be right up my alley because it tells the tale of North West Mounted Police officer Creed and his interpreter, a Copper Inuit McAndrew who spend a year traversing the titled Arctic region to investigate the disappearance of two Catholic priests in 1913 and their eventual trip to Edmonton. I fell in love with this novel and couldn’t put it down. This novel has something for everyone: it has adventure, mystery; the twists and turns keep you turning the pages. Coppermine is based on true events and as a former Edmontonian, I couldn’t help but enjoy reading about Edmonton in the 1910s.

On the Map: A Mind Expanding Exploration of the Way the World Looks by Simon Garfield

This is definitely a throwback but I read this book and I LOVED it; so it is always on my list of MUST READS. I saw this novel featured on the Colbert Report years ago and as a Social Studies teacher it really fascinated me and made me think about maps and the world in a different way. The author took me, “on a journey outlining the history of maps from the early explorers’ maps and the awe-inspiring medieval Mappa Mundi to Google Maps and the satellite renderings on our smartphones, [he] explores the unique way that maps relate and realign our history—and reflect the best and worst of what makes us human,” (Garfield, 2013). I look forward to reading some of his other works such as Timekeepers (2016), Our Hidden Lives (2004) and Just My Type (2010).

Sanditon by Jane Austen and Kate Riordan

Jane Austen is one of my favourite authors and I read all of her novels by the time I was in grade 8. Recently on a trip to Indigo I saw this book and I knew that I must have it. I had no idea that there was an unfinished manuscript. And, I am so thrilled that it was finished (and of course turned into a mini-series on Masterpiece). Sanditon is set during the Regency era, the plot follows the young and naive Charlotte as she navigates the new seaside resort of Sanditon.

Guilty Pleasures

guilt·y pleas·ure

noun

Something, such as a film, a television program, piece of music or food that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard, or is seen as unusual or weird.

Often it is these unusual or weird things that are the most scrumptious; today I am sharing mine. Feel free to tell me about your guilty pleasures in the comment section below!

1. Grilled cheese sandwich with chipotle aioli dipping sauce
Nothing more familiar or simply delicious than an ooey gooey grilled cheese; it reminds me of childhood lunches. No longer can I order these at restaurants –since they are relegated to the kids menu. I have traded the tomato soup or ketchup for the slight kick of heat from Culinary Treasure’s Chipotle Aioli. It may seem like an unusual combination but…don’t knock it till you try it.

2. Binge watching the Food Network
Nine times out of ten, if the television is on, the Food Network is on. If I was only allowed one channel; this one would be the one. I love watching marathons of Beat Bobby Flay, Pioneer Woman, Cutthroat Kitchen, Chopped and the various baking and cooking championships (both adult and kid versions). Sometimes my husband just shakes his head when he walks in the door to find the Food Network on yet again.

3. Staying in my pajamas all day on Sundays
Although this may seem lazy to some. I LOVE fuzzy pajamas. I love feeling comfy and cozy. So I relish being able to spend the day relaxing, reading, marking or puttering around the house in my PJs. It doesn’t matter if it is fall, winter, spring or summer; you can find me wearing fleece pants and a tank top.

4. Caramel Macchiatos from Starbucks
With a description such as this, “[f]reshly steamed milk with vanilla-flavored syrup marked with espresso and topped with caramel drizzle for an oh-so-sweet finish,“ it is easy to see how this is a guilty pleasure… such a delectable drink with 42 grams of sugar. I refer to it as my “fancy coffee,” which I only get a chance to have when I am in the city with my bestie.

5. Karuna Hydrating + Face Mask
I got this mask in a Fab Fit Fun box last year and I absolutely fell in love with it. Although I may look silly wearing them, they truly work! My skin looks brighter, radiant and smoother. It is like going to the spa in my own home. As, Aziz Ansari’s character on Parks and Recreation used to say: “Treat Yourself” and I most certainly do! A pack of four masks cost $28, and those who know me know that I can be a wee bit cheap when it comes to make-up and skincare products.

What am I currently RE-Reading???

I have always been a mystery novel nut and I find it really hard to find books that spark the same bookworm fire in me as my beloved Agatha Christie collection. I spent most of the summer though reading the Teacher Misery series by Jane Morris and lots of young adult fiction because I am an English teacher after all.

The Kinsey Millhone series by the late, great Sue Grafton filled the void in my life when I told my husband, “I literally have NO MORE books left to read.” I am starting to re-read them in the evenings before bed.

So far I have re-devoured…

A is for Ailibi
B is for Burglar
C is for Corpse
D is for Deadbeat
E is for Evidence
F is for Fugitive
G is for Gumshoe
H is for Homicide

And now currently…

I is for Innocent
In this novel we find PI Kinsey Millhone investigating the five year old murder of Isabelle Barney upon the request of her ex-husband, Ken Voight who seeks to prove that Isabelle’s widower did in fact kill her for her fortune. Kinsey is perplexed at the request as the widower (Mr. Barney) was acquitted by a court of law and his testimony still checks out; however suddenly the witnesses have changed their stories and more and more enemies of Isabelle are popping up, including her own twin sister. Kinsey has to find out who the real murderer is and avoid danger herself.

Remaining novels include…

J is for Judgement
K is for Killer
L is for Lawless
M is for Malice
N is for Noose
O is for Outlaw
P is for Peril
Q is for Quarry
R is for Ricochet
S is for Silence
T is for Trespass
U is for Undertow
V is for Vengeance
W is for Wasted
X
Y  is for Yesterday

Best Boardgames

Board games have been around forever; they are played by most cultures and societies. For example the Ancient Egyptians played Senet also known as “the passing game.” Senet is possibly the oldest board game in existence but the instructions were lost long ago.

In addition to a rich and varied history; board games also have many benefits. They allow you to have fun and feel good AND enjoy time with family and friends most obviously. But did you know there are some pretty important health benefits too?!? Board game play reduces both stress and risks for mental diseases (since the brain is active) and lowers blood pressure. Depending on the design or objective of the game, players can improve their memory formation and cognitive skills, speed up response time and are great tools for child development in terms of logic, reasoning and critical thinking. It is frequently said that laughter is the best medicine; lots of laughs are shared when playing games that is for sure; chemicals are released which boost immunity. For those in rehabilitation programs board games are very helpful; because they allow the opportunity to work on fine motor skills, coordination and dexterity.

“My Top Ten Board Games:

1. Trivial Pursuit
2. Scattergories
3. Yahtzee
4. Snakes & Ladder
5. Scrabble
6. Cranium
7. Trouble
8. Kerplunk
9. Life
10. Pay Day

What are your favourite board games? Leave me a comment!

Favourite Podcast: The Office Ladies

As a huge fan of The Office, you can understand just how excited I was when Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey launched The Office Ladies

Earwolf dubs this as, “the ultimate re-watch podcast.” Each week these two hilarious and talented actresses dissect an episode of The Office through Jenna’s summary, “Fast Facts” and Angela’s “Kinsey Tidbits.” More often than not one of them goes on a random but super interesting “deep dive” to find out literally every obscure aspect about the show and even about Scranton, PA.

I love when they bring on guests; whether it is the other stars, directors, writers or vital crew members like Phil Shea.

Every Wednesday I listen and then re-watch the episode they have covered and I look for everything they mentioned. I also ‘track’ along with them things like whether or not Mindy’s hair is up or down, who has a talking head facing in or out of the conference room and what is on Pam’s desk!

My favourite episode of the podcast was about the pilot; it was fascinating to hear about how the show was “born.”

My favourite guest stars have been Rainn Wilson & B.J Novak. I’d love for them to have Steve Carrell on!

You can tell how much that Jenna and Angela treasure their time on the show and how appreciative they are of everyone involved in making it. This is a funny yet heartwarming podcast!
