Her boss convinces her to attend a session with the famed spiritualist, Madame Lavinia. 2. The Maid: A Novel by Nita Prose

Molly Grey, a maid at the Regency Grand Hotel is unwittingly swept up in quite the criminal plot and she is framed for a murder she didn’t commit. She must step out of her comfort zone and help her friends set matters right before it is too late.

When a famed author drops dead in the newly renovated tea room at the Regency Grand Hotel, it is up to Head Maid Molly Grey to crack the case. Fun with Friends

As you know, I am a mystery buff. From television shows to books –I love mysteries. My friends and I have started a tradition; every month we “solve a murder” for our game night.

Unsolved Case Files

The most recent case we solved was Sandra Ivey…

August 10th, 2021 – At 11:10am the world’s first commercial space station, the Delta One, lost power and all communication with ground control for 40 minutes. During the blackout, a mysterious accident claimed the life of Sandra Ivey, CEO of Astro IV, the multi-billion dollar space tech company responsible for launching the station.

There were five other crew members aboard the Delta One and none claim to know what happened to Sandra while the power was out. Sandra’s former chief of security, Solomon Hart, was sent skyward to investigate, but only given 24 hours aboard the Delta One to make his case. Though it was officially ruled an accident, he suspects there’s more to this story than meets the eye.”

Cryptic Killers

The most recent case we solved was Case #7: Murder At Merivale Manor….

“On July 4, 1927, Astrid Pelham fell from the top floor balcony of the luxurious Merivale Manor, impaling her body on a statue below. The cause of her death remains a mystery, shrouded in whispers of murder, suicide, and even supernatural intervention. Armed with new evidence, it’s your job to piece it all together and work out who it was that killed the victim.”

How clean is your house right now?

My house is not clean. I hate cleaning! It’s something I always procrastinate about. My husband often works away so I sort of live in my mess until he comes home and then I tidy things up a bit. I’m only ever caught up on changing the cat litter because that would be so gross if I didn’t. I absolutely hate cleaning our bathroom, have you ever shared a bathroom with a guy?!?! Oh my goodness! We have indoor pets so I do have to continually sweep. I only ever truly do a deep clean when we are having company over or when I’m in summertime purge mode.

Back to the Vault: Current Addictions

Each month I travel back in time to see what I was writing about at the time. This time last year I was recounting what I was “currently addicted to.” I retired that series for this year; however, after reviewing the April 2023 post, I kind of miss it. It’s neat to be able to flashback.

Savory Salmon

Growing up on the coast; I ate a lot of seafood –its definitely the food item I miss the most living in the landlocked prairies. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I don’t have access to it, but it just hits differently. I have made more of a conscious effort to reduce my consumption of red meats and eat more fish. I simply can’t resist the following recipes…

Grilled Salmon Bruschetta with Avocado
Honey Garlic Salmon
Salmon Veggie & Grain Bowl
Creamy Sun-Dried Tomato Salmon & Orzo
Air Fryer Salmon

What do you think the biggest cultural differences are between your generation and your parents’ generation?

Freedom. I think that although my parents –who are baby boomers– had a relatively easy time compared to their own parents. My parents saw some pretty incredible cultural revolutions, however, they only went so far. I think subsequent generations and my own push the envelope a lot more and here we are! However, many things are being reversed, take a look at the news. The level of self-expression is mind boggling and a lot more people are living their truest and best lives; something that people of my parents; generation never had the chance to do. That being said, there is still much of the same institutionalized and systemic injustice which traps many sections of the population.

Water: From Flat to Fabulous

Who here is terrible at drinking enough water?? –ME! I hope I am not alone. My friend is doing a water challenge at her gym and we spent quite a bit of time talking about how we both find water boring. This caused us to investigate ways to add a little excitement to our water bottles without adding a ton of calories or artificial flavouring. These are the ones that we are going to be trying this month.

Nectarine, Basil & Clementine Infused Water
Pomegranate & Pear Infused Water
Grape & Mint Infused Water
Cantaloupe, Mint & Lemon Infused Water
Cranberry, Orange & Cardamom Infused Water

Do you use coupons?

Not really in the traditional sense of cutting them out of a flier and giving them to the cashier at checkout. If there are sales nowadays they are automatically accounted for at the time of purchase. However, if I do have a rewards card I use it; or if I’m ordering online and they have a discount code on the banner of the site or have emailed it or texted it to me – I will use it. I always used to look through the fliers as a little kid and pull out things and when we went to Costco I would hold on to the coupon sheet they gave us at the door to see if there was something new we would or could get. But we often didn’t need what was featured in those coupons anyways.

Raw Food Diet

We made the switch to raw food for our dog and the results have been remarkable; I can’t believe we didn’t do it sooner. The brand he loves is Bold by Nature. So why did we make the switch and what changes have we seen??

  1. His coat has never been shinier .
  2. His dandruff is at a minimum which made us think perhaps it was symptomatic of allergies; and if it isn’t the food had been great for his skin regardless.
  3. He is like a puppy again; so much more energy.
  4. Trying to get him to drink water has always been a struggle; and raw food helps to keep him hydrated especially when he is super active during hunting season.
  5. He is at a more healthy weight and his weight is more consistent –he really fluctuated between summer & winter.
  6. At our last vet visit they noted that he had some tartar; it wasn’t bad but we definitely didn’t want it turning into a major dental issue; since switching his teeth look much better.
  7. We definitely were dissatisfied with the amount of fillers in his kibble since the manufacturers changed the recipe.
  8. We noticed his got stiff easily and wondered if there was wear and tear on his elbow. Since switching we haven’t noticed any limping after laying down and his hygroma has not returned –sometimes it got to be the size of a golf ball.
  9. Let’s be honest, dogs can be stinky; since making the switch not only has his breath improved (probably because of improved digestive benefits) but his farts are not longer room clearing.
  10. We have even noticed a change in his bowel movements; he is more regular and seems less constipated.
